So i've been paying for a 1977 Marshall Super Bass 100 for the past few months, and finally paid it off. It is now on it's way across Canada, it should be here this time next week. I'm also working on a 2x15 cabinet that will match the head exactly. a JCM800 Bass Series 2x15 with sidewinder speakers. Does anyone else play one of these amps? I'm interested in hearing what you like about it, what music you play, what bass you use through it, your favorite settings, input configurations.. etc.
Hahaha.. yes it is the SAME year as Lemmy's Murder One amp. not a huge motorhead fan, but I do like his tone.
I have a 75 SLP100 which is pretty much the same as a Super Bass (I think), sounds great. not a lot of low end headroom but the tone is sweet. I just missed a JCM800 4x12 bass cab (Sidewinders) on craigs, bummed about that. those Marshall bass cabs are hard to find. I would love to own a rig like you've built, congrats, it should sound amazing.
Its definetly on my GAS list. Theres a '73 for sale here in Seattle I'd like to snag. Looking forward to hear how you like it.
I was lucky when I snagged mine. Bought it from a guy in California. Was worried as he seemed a little shady, but in the end it all worked out and I was able to get the cabinet. I found it by checking the Marshallampforums.com classified ads section (much like the one here at TB, only not as good). I believe that once I have this rig all together, and I plaster pictures of it all over the net, these JCM bass series cabinets will become nearly impossible to find.
As you know, I have a few old Super Basses, and JCM 800 Bass Series cabs (all of which came from California, oddly enough!), including a 1552 (the same 2x15 w/Sidewinders you have). The 1552 cab is VERY loud! A Super Bass into it will peel paint and shake stuff off shelves. Add a 1520 4x12 top, and you'll feel like your guts are going to explode, heheh... On a serious note, in my experience, the 1552 cab actually produces a lot of bottom end, and, it greatly benefits from being lined. Cheers!
Hi. Back in the day I played through a JMP 1959 paired with 215 & 412 JCM 800 cabs. As always with 4 input Marshalls or clones, I did link the channels for more versatile tone. While that kind of a rig does the classic deep bass shy bass tone very well, it's not for everyone. Enjoy. Regards Sam
T-Bird and Clammy, which channels do you guys like to link together? PS: I'm for sure going to line the inside of my 1552.
I have to admit, that while I've always wanted a Marshall Super Bass amp, it wasn't until I saw your rig that I decided I wanted to pair it with the IBS JCM Bass Series cabinets. So you could say my rig will be a small homage to yours! haha, or a complete rip off, either one.
i'd be interested to know what, if any, changes were made to the Super Bass amp over the course of it's production. Other than cosmetics of course. I found a cool thread at the gearpage: (guitar players tho) The Officious Marshall Super Bass (Bass Circuit) Thread ; aka 1992 / 1986 Circuits - The Gear Page
For bass, I never linked the channels. When I was playing with a lot of distortion, I used the high input of channel 1, like Lemmy. When I joined Exciter, and needed a less distorted sound, I plugged into the low channel 2 input. Cheers!
Heheh... and my rig is an homage to Lemmy's, as is my style and sound (not as much these days, but I still have a lot of grit going on! ) Cheers!
The Super Bass circuit remained virtually unchanged from 1969 until 1981 where the preamp was redesigned for the JCM 800 Series. Cheers!
Cool to know. So I guess the changes were mostly cosmetic then. I won't have my 2x15 put back together in time for when my Super Bass arrives in the mail, so I might need to go borrow or rent a cabinet to use in the meantime.
I always link the channels on my Marshalls, for guitar and bass. CH I is bassy CH II is trebly, blending them together is where it's at for me. usually it's mostly CH I with a touch of CH II blended in to add presence.
I waited till 3pm, had to go to work. What I didn't know was that my amp wouldn't be coming until later tonight. TURNS OUT... Fed Ex actually forgot to load my amp onto the truck, so the truck was driving around all day, meanwhile my amp was in another city. Once I left for work, my brother took over waiting, he told me he got a call around 4:30pm from Fed Ex saying my package got left behind, but that someone would drive to Stoney Creek (about 50km away), grab my package and deliver it. According to my brother, my amp arrived around 6:30pm, on a Friday. Not bad If I say so myself... I honestly would have expected them in this situation to say "ah forget it, we'll deliver it Monday, or make him come pick it up". Anyways, amp is here. Arrived safe and sound, looks amazing. Haven't played it yet, pics coming soon.
