I have been playing bass now for over 30 years. Surprisingly, during that time I have never owned a P bass. I played a few over the years but never really liked the sound of a Precision or even a Jazz Bass. The closest that I came to owning one was an Epiphone by Gibson bass that I bought new somewhere between 1989 to 1990. It was a passive bass with a P style pickup in it. It sold brand new at Guitar Center for only $199.99 and played like a much more expensive bass. With that bass, even though the body was very similar to a Precision bass and it had a single passive P style pickup in it, I don’t recall is sounding anything like a P bass.

Well, I have had a lot of people over the years tell me I should get a P bass. I would be told that they sit in a live mix really well and sound great recording with them. From their popularity and history, I knew that to be true but I just never liked the tone of one for some reason.

In the last few years, I have had a guy want to use me on some studio work but he only wanted a Fender Precision bass used. Due to my endorsement deals with Killer B Guitars and Nordstrand Pickups, I got him to compromise with me. I would have Killer B build me a P bass and put Nordstrand pickups in it.

Well, my Killer B P bass finally arrived yesterday. I literally spent all night last night playing it and over the coarse of those few hours, I finally figured out why so many bass players like P basses.

Back in November, I did a huge purchase at Guitar Center. In that purchase, I got 2 MIA Fender Precision basses but only kept them one week and returned them for another Music Man Stingray 5 and some other gear.

With my Killer B P bass, I think the biggest difference is the Nordstrand pickups in it. I went with the Nordstrand NP4a pickups and they sound fantastic! When I had my 2 MIA Fender P basses, I noticed on both of them if you adjusted the tone knob to the far counterclockwise position to where it sounded more lower tone wise, the volume also very slightly dropped. Not by much but just barely enough to notice it if you paid attention. With the Nordstrand’s, the volume is consistent throughout the tone knob being adjusted. I also noticed that with the Nordstrand’s, the notes sound much clearer.

My nearest Guitar Center is about 2 hours away from me but I want to play both a MIA and a MIM Fender Precision bass next to mine to get a good side by side comparison.

But to all you P bass lovers, I owe you all an apology because they are starting to grow on me.

Here are the pics of my Killer B P bass.

That looks great, I’ve always been a P fan but realize no everyone is. Enjoy your acquisition.

  7. Look at that finish! To quote Spinal Tap, “It’s like how much more black could it be? And the answer is none... None more black.”
