New bass day: Limelight '63 Jazz - light relic

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by wateroftyne, Jun 16, 2014.

  1. Hi everyone!

I went to have a look at a new American Standard Precision that someone was selling over the weekend. It was very nice, but I'm just not a new shiny bass kind-of-guy.

The seller was also selling a Limelight '63 Jazz medium relic. Limelight are a new UK-based outfit who specialise in P & J-style relics.

Now, I swore myself off Jazzes a while ago when I sold my '71, but this thing was smiling at me in an 'aren't I pretty?' kind of way.

Next thing I know, I've bought it! I'm so shallow....

For some reason the previous owner has removed the Limelight signature from the back (just done in marker pen, I think?) - which is a shame - and, bizarrely - the 'offset body' logo from the headstock. I don't know why.

I've actually been talking to Mark at Limelight about getting a lightly relic'd P - if I still don't connect with Jazzes, this is such a good job a Limelight P could well be on the cards. We'll see...

Here's a video of how it sounds:

  2. That neck looks nice! sounds good to .

I wonder though why they use later cbs style tuners then the taller stemmed reverse style correct for a '63.

  3. I'm guessing this was specified by the original owner. Purely a guess, though.

  4. This bass is Tommy Shannon approved.

When you say "you're just not a new shiny bass kind of guy", you really mean it!

Is that a Precision neck with a Jazz bass logo??..or am I seeing things? Nut width looks 1.75" to me.

I was thinking that, too. Definitely looks like a P-width neck. If so, awesome!

  8. Yep - it's an inbetweener. The nut width is 40mm...

  9. I've updated the sound clips with some recordings using flats. I love this bass!

  10. Nice looking bass - the relicing is not "overdone". Congratulations. :D

That is a great looking and sounding bass! A little too rusty around the bridge for me, but cool nonetheless. Congrats!

Very nice, and the pg looks pretty darn good - it's a selling-point for me as most every version of a vintage tort other than an actual vintage tort falls way short of 'that' look. I finally found Mark at Spitfire who nails it.
