Last year, I ordered a custom Phil Mann Signature bass from Overwater. It is epic. But I've always been intrigued Scott Devine's signature jazz bass. The 16.5mm string spacing and the Overwater buffer preamp are two things I assumed I would like in a bass... but I didn't want to go through the lengthy build process again. Imagine my surprise when I found the exact bass I was looking for on BassBuddha.com. I emailed Morten at Bass Buddha, and he was spectacular to deal with. What a cool guy! I had to sell a Mayones to afford the new Overwater. But it was only a matter of time before the deals were done and this beautiful, groovy bass was in my hands. And I am not disappointed. This bass is filled with mojo and good vibes. The passive buffer preamp is subtle, but very responsive. And the tight string spacing makes this an extremely playable bass. This bass will have a solid place in my arsenal.
Generally not a huge fan of black hardware, but it slays on that beast! Did it come with a pair of gloves?
I typically don’t like black hardware either, but I agree. It’s a tight little bass. And no... no gloves. lol
I actually sold that bass a little while back. It was a fun bass to play. Lightweight. Very responsive. The neck was slim & fast. I loved the tight string spacing. I had accumulated a lot of high end basses at the time and needed to free up some cash for another bass build. So I let a couple of my Overwaters go. it’s a great bass though.
Thanks for the response, I do have a couple questions if you don't mind answering. Tone wise was it really a J or could it get a little fatter similar to a P? I am considering to make it a PJ and not a J. I'm going to probably let go of a Sadowsky to make room for this one if I Iike it. Did you have any issues playing your other basses while having it? My concern is going from the 16.5mm spacing to my basses that are 19 and 20mm..
Beautiful looking bass! I'd never be able to get on with the string spacing though, my fingers are like sausages hahaha
Not sure who you're asking but the Scott Devine J only comes in 33". You could order an Overwater J and customize the scale length and bridge spacing on that one.
Yeah, it was 100% a jazz bass. Overwater's buffer preamp is interesting, in that it is passive but still battery powered. This makes for a lot of tone control & responsiveness in those knobs. Still, I found the neck pickup to be fat & very precision-like. Personally, I wouldn't have swapped anything on it. It did exactly what it was supposed to do. Going from 16.5mm 19mm wasn't too bad. Just run some scales or arpeggios for a few minutes & muscle memory will take it from there. The 16.5mm is really nice though. Economy of motion is a real thing.
That's exactly the answer I was looking for. I wanted to make sure there is a little fatness to it just to have it on tap if needed. I'm not a Jaco player and wanted to be sure it's not a 1 trick pony. I'm really looking forward to the string spacing for better economical movement.
