I just purchased an Alembic Elan bass from the Low End Bass Shop in Murfreesboro, TN. About 20 years ago, I was in dire financial straits and had to sell my Alembic Spoiler. I got totally ripped off from the guitar store that I sold to.(If you live in Portland, Or, take a guess of what store it was). Ever since then, I always promised myself that I would buy another Alembic someday. Recently, I was did a random search for Alembic but I saw all the ads on Reverb and they either didn't have the model I wanted or they were prohibitively out of my price range. A few weeks ago I sold my Rickenbacker and my Fernandes 8 string bass and I finally had the money to take the plunge. I bought a 1992 Alembic Elan that is quilted blue with gold hardware. Finally after waiting for ages, I had an Alembic again. Plugged in direct to the amp, it sound excellent but when I put it through an Alembic SF-2 filter I finally had the tone I have always heard in my head. I brought it to rehearsal. The guys loved it. Well, later this month we have a gig and I can't wait to hear it in a live environment.
What’s the deal with the SF2 filter? My knowledge of Alembic is VERY limited. I know “of” them and have seen lots of truly horrifically ugly basses from them. Yours is something I’d rock for sure.
Excellent, I'm glad you finally got another. I sold my last S1 because of wanting to put the money into the home I was buying (and now in the process of selling) and going through a bout of missing my late wife and thinking I'd never play again, so why keep it. Stupid decision in hindsight, but I kept the bass she bought me.
The SF2 is an expansion of the filter found onboard a SII Alembic. It's not difficult to describe from an EE POV, but will take a while. Do you really want me to?
Gorgeous bass! It could have been any store around here that ripped you off, truthfully. There's a reason I sell my used gear online or on CL instead of to a store.
