Hello TB, lurker here. I'm going to ask for a new bass as a Christmas/birthday gift. (My birthday is just two weeks before Christmas.) The only thing is that I don't know which bass I want. I was hoping for some suggestions for a brightish bass with a bit of snarl to it. Not too much where it growls no matter what, but not a lack of growl whatsoever. What brands should I be looking at? Number of strings does not matter, 4, 5, and 6 are all cool.

I currently have a fender P with flats (With year old strings, and man, they DO get better with age!), and that covers the warm/mellow section very nicely, but I'm just looking for something to slap with, or for fingering through RHCP stuff.

    Fender Jazz bass..

Slappers delight, and if Flea can use it so can you :)

What kind of jazz bass? A mim would be nice, but what kind? Active, the squier deluxe active 5...?

I'm asking this because my mom has to drive me, and she has arthritis and won't last long enough to try out every jazz bass there, so I kind of have to know what I'm looking for.

well cant go wrong with a MIM Jazz

New Squier Vintage Modified Jazz with blocks and binding is nice as well

Squier Active 5 I havent played. So no comment

Highway One Jazz little more money but well worth it USA, BadassII Bridge, Nitro Finish, etc,

i know a guy that uses a schecter diamond for slap and it works well. i don't slap myself so not much help there but i would agree with ibanezcollector, the squier vm jazz is worthwhile. if you REALLY want to be cool (and spend a lot) get a cheap jazz bass copy and then replace the neck with a bubinga one from warmoth. that should sound great.

    The state of denial.
Might also check out the Ibanez ATK series...fantastic slappers.
