    hi all,

I just got into building basses and guitars this summer/fall. I had never done any real wood work prior but I was able to get a lot of good info from this forum and others like it, so thanks for the good posts.

So, I kind of went a little crazy with the number of builds I did in a short period of time. I was on hiatus from work and after I made a body out of scrap 2x4, I got the bug and just kept building. Now I thought i’d share and see what you guys think.

Being a newbie, I feel pretty good about them. Obviously, they’re not perfect and they all have there flaws. But for a first run, I think they’re decent.

Carl Thompson tribute 6 string - mahogany, walnut, and maple. Walnut and maple neck

Winter build off still has 5 weeks remaining. At your speed you could get 2-3 entries in before Mar 21.

    Nice stuff.

That pine 2x4 belongs at the Grande Ol' Opry! I think you found a niche!.
If it's too heavy, just route out the back a bit.

    Cool stuff.

Those SD pups probable sound pretty good.

Have you checked out Bill Lawrence Wilde pups for bass and guitar?

Haha, thanks, Charlie. Unfortunately, I blew most of my budget on these. If I can find a few extra dollars, i might give it a shot. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s builds.

Thanks for checking them out, Stumbo.

Yeah, the 2x4 telecaster’s got some twang. Good tip on routing out the back to save weight. It’s actually a little too light as it is, so I get a bit of neck dive. Was thinking about adding a small weight inside the control cavity to balance it out.

Yeah, the Duncan’s sound pretty good. Haven’t heard of those Bill Lawrence Wilde pups. I’ll have to check them out.

Wow, amazing! That Carl T tribute, love the thin strips of figured maples thru the body. Especially on the back, how it contrasts with the neck's wood/color patter --- great visual designs. Congrats!

I'm a first time builder as well, with my Project Valkyrie on going posted here. If my finished product could be anywhere near the result you got, I'd be in heaven!

Hey, thanks for the kind words 83!

I was pretty pleased with the Carl Thompson builds overall. However, I still need to work on my frets for both. I’m still getting some buzzing and the action on both are higher than i’d like.

I’ll have to check out your Project Valkyrie. I’m sure it’ll turn out awesome. Just take your time and enjoy the process.

Love that black maple top. Which pups are in it? How's it wired?

That is way cool finish. Single cut look is happening.

I play some guitar. I'd rock that anywhere. It would be the nicest guit on stage!

Glad you like it, Stumbo. It’s actually a dark blue. I was originally going for black but for some reason the wood dye i was using kept coming out blue instead, so I just went with it.

This one’s got some cheap pups in it right now. I actually need to refinish it. I spilt some thin super glue on it and it burned through the lacquer. The top also ended up getting a crack in the bottom. Once I’m able to refinish it though, I’ll probably get some new pups soon after

It’s got gotoh hardware and I currently have it wire based off a les Paul diagram I found.

The 2 yard finish. Looks good from 2 yards. I kid, I kid.

The blue is way cool. Seems that it should be in production somewhere. Post some pics when after you refinish.

A super distortion bridge pickup works really well. I have one in my '83 Les Paul.

    Keep up the good work!

Wow. You hit the ground running. Cool!

On the Thompson inspired build, how are the bridge pieces held in place for intonation? Is it just by string pressure or are they glued down or ....?

    Big welcome Jerry!
My name's Kevin but most just call me 'Rock'.

8 instruments since late summer is phenomenal.
    Nice work!
I personally very much dig your original 4 string.
Love the shade of the maple... is that natural ...(maple heartwood) or did you stain it?
Plus the matched Gotoh hw... & Aguilar ...nice stuff.

Did you make the bridge on your CT trib. 6?
    Very cool.
Keep up the great work.:thumbsup:

Haha. 2 yard finish is right. it will be a while before I refinish it but I'll get some pics up when I do.
Ive heard good things about those super distortions.

Hey, rw. Thanks for taking a look.

The bridge pieces slide freely, but the dovetail groove and the string pressure hold them in place.

Hey, Rock. thanks for checking them out.

I dig the brown four string, too. Those Aguilar MMs sound nice. I dyed it brown with some Keda wood dye - powder mixed with water.

Yep, I made the bridge out some left over rosewood and maple. Its worked out pretty well so far.

Here's a couple other basses that I made for my nephew during the same time. So, I did 10 total.

5 String CT style - Pine with walnut stripes, Ebony Fretbaord, maple neck.
4 String - maple and walnut top, pine core. Maple/walnut neck, rosewood fretboard.

How much do the pine core basses weigh? Sounds like a good way to save weight.
