I just bought this 70's ampeg 8x10 from my drummer. He's had it for a few years and it's been "mine" for a little while, but I finally paid for it, so I decided to start using it more often. The guy he bought it from had owned it for years, and had it stored for a while unplayed, so it's in pretty good shape. The jack has been converted to a 1/4" with a little metal plate, but it still has the "Ampeg SVT" badge with a serial number on the back, and all the speakers looked original when we took it apart. It has all the handles in the right places, and the mounts on the bottom for the dolly, but didn't come with one. Instead, there are four heavy duty wheels screwed into the side.

Mostly, this was just a post so I could brag about my new cab, but also it struck me as odd is that the ampeg badge is on the right side instead of the left. I had thought they always mounted these things on the left side but there doesn't apear to be screw holes in the grill cloth. Was this something they did when they sold the cabs in pairs?

Sorry about the crappy cell phone pic, but I didn't bring my camera.

That's what's weird to me, it doesn't look like there are screw holes in the cloth which would indicate it was moved, and the cloth looks original. Either way, it sounds balls to the wall with my V4.

  4. I played something like this at a gig where it was provided backline. It also had wheels along the side, and handles on the other side. it was a total P.I.T.A. to move across the carpeted stage with the handles because two people couldn't lift it together. Also wasn't crazy about the tone, but it was my first night with a new amp so I blame that.
other bands using it had great results with it, the older stuff is definitely better than the nampegs, IMO.

Thanks for your terrific comment. You sound like an expert!

    :rollno:

But I guess they just moved the logo for some reason.

Do you think this comes across like somebody who's done his homework?

He also says he played something like this once at a show where it was provided as back line. That doesn't make you an Ampeg guru. But it doesn't stop him from acting like one.

  8. Acting like one? Christ calm down. None of what he was said was written in a particularly authoritative tone, just seems to have had an experience with the mentioned cab and has obviously heard new ampeg that he hasn't liked. You don't need have done any homework to have real life experience.

  9. I've had a few of these cabs including a 75 similar to yours. The badge should go where you're thinking, it's possible that the grill was recovered at some point or that the grill has been flipped top to bottom. The original holes may be on the bottom right now. You can relocate the badge pretty easily. If you take something flat and thin I've used a butter knife it works, you can pry the grill off the cab, it's held on with a weird kind of velcro. There is a wooden brace in the corner of the grill. It's just a matter of getting your holes lined up and screwing the badge on. There's a ton of reference pics of these cabs online to help in terms of pretty much exact placement. Good Luck that's a nice cab, their getting hard to find!!

The square behind the grill is behind the emblem. I suspect the grill cloth was flipped front to back and that moved the badge to the other side.

Novel thing during the history of this cab. If you get the matching second cab, it would put the badges on either the inside or the outside... Here's what it is supposed to look like:

Good call. That sounds like a likely scenario. Might have something to do with the casters added to the side so if the cabs were flipped on the side the emblem would still be up in the corner.

Not only is the badge on the wrong side, but it's not even mounted the right distance from the edges and it's crooked. It was moved

Honestly, I'd get a good handtruck and skip the dolly. The dolly is nice for moving it around on stage, but it really doesn't have any advantages for moving it upstairs or long distances. Plus it probably adds another 20 lbs.

The V4 is awesome, I've had that for a while now, and until I bought this cab I was using it with a 70s 4x10, but it really sings with the 8x10.

As far as the dolly, I think I'll keep the wheels that are on there now since they don't interfere with getting it into my car and it can sit on the floor without me having to take the cart off.
