    Hey everyone,

Has anyone tried the new Diamond "SE" Special Edition comp from Diamond pedals?

I am currently running a Dedalo Gorila comp which is pretty sweet, however given the rave and stellar reviews of

other Diamond comps in the past, this one has peaked my interest.

Actually the smaller footprint is the main culprit of the sudden prompt in posting this query of mine.

Here is a link to the Diamond Pedals website:

    http://www.diamondpedals.com/products/comp-se/

Thanks in advance for any and all inputs guys & gals!

    Peace!

    Q :)

I could be mistaken, but it looks like the same size as the regular Diamond pedals, just with bigger knob caps.

The upgrades they mention are higher-quality electronic components.

My bad for not being clearer here Bongo.... I meant to say smaller than my Gorila....

In your expert findings how would you compare the two.....? The Gorila to the new "SE" Diamond?

Thanks SO much for ALL the great info you provide for us all on this fabulous forum!

    Peace!

    Q. :)

I haven't tested the new version Gorila yet. What are its dimensions please?

It's hard for me to imagine a compressor sounding better, for me, than my Diamond BCP-1. If they release an SE version of the BCP-1, I'll be hard pressed not to give it a try. The BCP-1 is such a wonderful sounding compressor. To be fair, I use just a touch of its compression, but absolutely love it's tone sweetening capabilities. Even at unity gain, you can immediately tell it's doing something. Bongo's review mentions something to the affect of "It somehow fattens and simultaneously makes things more clear" (paraphrase), and he is absolutely right.

    Bongo,
I didn't know that Dedalo made a "newer"compressor. I own the original 5 white button unit that I thought was the only one that they made and stopped making them....
    It measures 4.5 x 3.5....

    Thanks again!

    Q :)

The Diamonds are also 4.5 by 3.5". I just looked at my review of the Gorila and it says "The Diamond has a purer, more transparent tone and action, but its ratio is lower and its indicator LED is not as easy to read as the Gorila's." FWIW this is the newer Gorila version, which is the same size:

And BTW.... I DONT have a rocket science degree in Astro-physics nor do I work at NASA.... So these next few words from the Diamond pedals website REALLY makes NO sense to me whatsoever!!! Call me "electrically, mechanically challenged" that's cool! I just know when a bass sounds great and when it doesn't... :)

    - audiophile favorite Takman carbon film resistors,
    - WIMA polyprop caps, and 20 gauge oxygen free hookup wire in the signal path
    - specially tuned opto compression circuit
    - audiophile grade Analog Devices FET-input opa

    HUH???

    Thanks in advance Bongo!
Yes, that's the one I have! So is the "newer" SE by Diamond just a repackaged unit? I saw that it doesn't have the toggle for the EQ section for the tone.

So it's the same without the black knobs then.... It just "seemed" smaller in size to me.... However Diamond says that they "beefed up" the electronics which I posted earlier....

^^ Indeed, feels like they sell pedals to pedal geeks instead of musicians..

    - Tuned vactrol opto-isolator variable resistance path as used in high-end studio compressors for smooth attack and decay characteristics while preserving initial signal transients.
    - ‘Special Edition’ audiophile-grade component selection in the audio signal path, including WIMA polypro caps, Takman carbon film resistors, oxygen-free copper hookup wire, and precision Analog Devices opamp.
    - Post-compressor ’tilt’ EQ provides a very musical tailoring of frequency response – seamlessly transition from a darker jazz voicing to a brighter jangle, with flat frequency response at the center detent position. - Double filtering stage in side chain to eliminate low frequency modulation while preserving fast compression response. Dual AC capacitive coupling paths for improved transient response.
    - Bi-color LED provides visual indication of depth of compression.
    - True bypass signal path.
    - Battery or standard negative tip 9V DC adapter operation, can be powered from 9 to 24 V negative tip.

All they are saying is they wired the SE up with higher-quality electronic guts. That's all the tech talk means. It doesn't do anything different, it just has innards that are supposed to sound even better.

Whether it does or doesn't really sound better is up to those with golden ears.

I feel ya on the "golden ears" comment my friend!

I think I will stay with my trusty Gorila!

Thank you again Bongo! You rock my brother!

Have a wonderful and peaceful Christmas and a healthy new year!

    Peace!

    Q. :)

  14. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but on the diamond website they call this special edition comp "Diamond CPR - SE", and as far as I know that's the guitar pedal.
    CPR1 - guitar comp
    Bcp1 - bass comp.

Hmm.... Interesting... I didn't even take that into consideration!

Then THAT RIGHT THERE ^^^^ answers my query and puts all my wondering to rest!

Thanks for pointing out that fact bro! :)

    Peace!

I have to say I was a little skeptical until I saw they were using 20 gauge oxygen free hookup wire now color me interested.
