I got a vox vt40x amp for my guitar. I couldn't get any sound to come through. Does everything have to be hoooked up to a computer these days before it works?

Aren’t those steam driven? Fill the water reservoir. Shovel in some coal and get about 30PSI in the boiler, then it oughtta work. I’d advise against tightening down the pressure safety valve to get more grit, as the failure mode from this mod can be quite violent

The trouble is, they don’t make coal like they used to.

    Hey welcome to TalkBass!!!!

You may have bought the ONLY amp I know of that requires hooking to a computer or phone tweak.

That said, it should have come with lots of presets from the factory. You shouldn't have to hook it up before getting any sound out of it.

But if computer tweaking isn't your thing, return it for a cheap Fender Rumble or something similar.

I retract the question due to a faulty instrument cable. The only reason I got it was that it was hybird instead of straight solid state.

Yes and yes. Not only do they no longer make the same coal, the money is in a different type of coal.

The vt40x needs to be submerged in water for sound to come out. Didn't you get a manual with it?
