I want to replace my upright bass fingerboard with a thicker, rounded one.
There are a number of them on ebay for around $70, Indonesian and Chinese ebony. Is that a reliable way to go?

If you're not a luthier, and it doesn't sound like you are, go see one. They will supply the fingerboard and install it. This is not a do it yourself project.

... and they will shape it, and make a new nut, and check the bridge still fits with the new height and shape ...

  4. Also, a $70 fingerboard is not a reliable way to go. More like $200-300, then the labor cost to fit, shape, setup on top of that.
