It has been suggested to me that I have my Ken Smith defretted(!!!). This is a bit hard for me to swallow. How about replacing the fretted board with a fretless board. Can this be done? If so, who among you is master luthier enough to do the job ??? Seems like a herculean task !

Whoever replaces the board will most likely have to de-fret it in the process. Replacing the board is the heavier (and more expensive) task.

I've replaced a board before, but it's not the kind of work that I like to take on. You might want to call Jack Read -- either to de-fret or to replace the board.

Or perhaps Mr. Smith, himself, seeing as how he would most likely be the most familiar with the bass and the process used in it's construction.

I wonder if Ken would do the job ? Has anyone sent his / her bass back to the factory for work ?
