My old stereo system finally died and I'm in the market for a new one.

I'm going to buy a cd player and hook it up with some quality speakers. Nothing flashy, I just want a sturdy and strong cd player.

What brands should I look in to / stay away from?

    Sony
    Technics
    Panasonic
    ...

    ?

    I can't afford Bose ;)

    Ehhh, no.

Seriously, it has to stay affordable ;)

  3. If you can't even afford bose, you need to save some more money.

  4. ive had good luck trolling the stereo stores, used and new,and local cl type sites........lots of older but really good gear comes up without the retail markups........panasonic and the other mass market stuff is cheap new but you get what you pay for,at least retail anyhow......

ive found that if you are not in a rush you will find the deals. marantz, harmon kardon, mac et al are good .........i found an hk receiver at a yard sale free, plus fifty bux for repair and i use it in my office daily

try to select gear that will not all have to be upgraded all at once ie; a good amp and a dvd player (the cost very little these days)means that you can use the dvd to pay cd's for now and upgrade to a cd player later without having to buy an amp plus you can use the dvd for movies too

  6. Buying bose is like buying a Krupps burr grinder and espresso machine. You spent a bit of money, but you still ended up buying something that doesn't do the job that well. You have to fork over the money for a Silvia and a Mezzer to get what you really want.

I think I would need to hear your budget. Cheap to one person may be something altogether different to another.

I believe you only get what you pay for. You pay a Sony price...you get Sony quality.

You say you want to hook a CD player up to some speakers. No amp? No receiver? More info from your end would make our suggestions more educated.

    Cheers,

    Eh?
Self-powered monitors could be a good solution, depending on the size of the room. lowsound's link is very interesting.

Or for the price, you can trade much quality for more volume. Not my choice though; I use two 7W (!) monitors in my small room. Interestingly enough, I have to *remove* a little bass for the response to be flat :p

  10. There are many good review sites for stereo gear and speakers, including audioreview.com.

Look around, hit some stores, listen and read, and check Craigslist, Ebay and sales at local stores. You system cannot sound any better than the speakers let it!

If you're only going for speakers, +1 to the suggestions above.

If you want a system that will make the females moist, two words....Klipsch Aragon.

    aragon-stage-one-ssp-amp-combination.

Honestly Mr. Vorago, i financed a Bose stereo for my grandmother and the minimum payment is only 42 dollars a month. I don't care what anyone says, it sounds pretty amazing.

I have always had good results with Pioneer home audio equipment. But I don't have any of that anymore. I don't have any home theater equipment, but our plasma plugs into a power conditioner I used to have in my bass rig when I played bass back in the day.

Wait....I do have this big honkin' Pioneer receiver sitting under a pile of magazines and other stuff. If it weren't so much for shipping, I would send it to you. I don't need it anymore.

Ok whew. I'm not a girl afterall. I'm moist, but it's just from being drunk and apathetic on the couch. Don't mind me. I'll be sitting here peeing myself apparently.
