The Icon series is made in China - not the same bass you saw a few years ago. Standard Hofners are German-built. The Icons were just introduced in October. I'd say the jury's still out on them, but there was a thread here last week about them -- http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=285070

Thanks . . . I appreciate the heads up. It threw me for a loop though. I had a Jay Turser copy that I hated. I don't suppose anybody's copy is going to make much difference. I had wanted one since the 60s (of course) and once I played one I found too much about it I didn't like.

Even my wife (Not a fan of my GAS, generally) said "You ought to grab one". Actually, there's another, newer series called the Contemporary Series that I believe is only sold in the UK. If I have this straight (Not sure that I do), it's German-made, with German hardware and fewer short-cuts. I've heard prices in the $6-700 range for the Contemporaries. I'd love to hear the Icons are good, but if not, I suppose the Contemporary is more likely to close-in on traditional Hofner quality.

Now, if any of them make a Club Bass, I'd spring for it today...

My bad. It's also Chinese, but higher quality parts. The USD conversion from British Pounds looks like about $820 (figure a hefty shipping and insurance bill). Thats once you find a UK dealer who'll sell you one.

I like the Club bass too but once I tried the other I never bothered with another hollowbody. Maybe hollows are just not my thing . . . and I abhore neck-dive too.
