I had a crack on the new cheaper model of the Ibanez Gary Willis bass yesterday... it wasn't bad. All the Willis staples are there, custom tuners, single humbucker, Willis Ramp. The bass came in a rather utilitarian flat black colour - I suspected it was luthite, like the Ergodyne basses, but no, apparently it's basswood. The lined fingerboard appeared to be phenolic. It played nicely, and had a pretty good tone with a strong low end, although, to my ears, it didn't sound very "fretless" - not a great deal in terms of growl or "mwah". One thing I will say though, is that if you like to play anything other than fingerstyle, the ramp gets in the way quite severely, but I think it can be removed.

Not bad, all in all. Anyone else tried them?
