I bought a used jazz bass Saturday for 400 dollars from a good friend at the music store (I got a deal!). I have several issues I need advice on....

    1) The bridge saddles are rusted and the holes where you raise the action are almost rusted shut.

    2) The metal parts of the pick-ups are a bit rusty as well.

    3) When I plugged up for the first time at my gig that night, hours after purchase. During soundcheck the sound started going in and out, but ceased to do so during the set. The next day I shook the bass and it feels like little pebbles or something is moving around in there.

What should I do in all these cases. Plus, any other input you can give.
    Thanks,
    Jiles

What kind of Jazz bass? If you paid 400 for something with so many problems, it better be an American.

I suggest changing to a new bridge. They are cheap, and many can drop right into the original screw holes. The Gotoh 201 is what I put in my J, you can get there for 'bout $20 here: www.warmoth.com

It sounds like the output jack went, if you can solder it's not that hard to replace, and even if you take it in, it wouldn't be much at a repair shop. It's probably just a bad connection that needs to be resoldered, but you might want to throw in a new jack just because you'll probably have to replace it eventually.

Also, check with another bass to make sure it's not your amp or cable.

    Just my humble advice. :)

  3. If you want to keep it original(don't know why you would unless it was vintage) then soak the bridge in WD40 overnight. Otherwise get a new bridge. Two birds with one stone.
