Alright, so who knows Bruce and Jon?.............I knew Tico Torres when I was much younger!!

  9. My old Boss lives right near the Boss and travels in a couple similar circles of big dollar outings. The CFO of that company visits regularly with Sebastian Bach as their children are active in similar stuff at school.

Does Jon still live in NJ? I've heard finance wise he's got his empire funneled through TN and that his estate in NJ is utilizing a farm tax assessment.

I figured that almost everyone here would be up by NY. We're still outnumbered, but I'm pleasantly surprised by the number of us in the Philly area.

  12. Maybe some of you folks in South Jersey can recommend me a good teacher... I am shopping for a new one. I am looking for a blues/jazz based kind guy, close to my age or older (36).

  13. not sure if he gives lessons or not but Nickybass is who popped into my head... I think he's about 20 minutes from you.

I am not sure if I qualify or not. I grew up in Jersey (Chatham Township) but moved to Harrisburg PA a years ago. I still feel like a Jersey boy though! I have even been known to say that "I am just some guy from Jersey." (usually in techie discussions or when I get lost driving about).

The Mockingbird pictured was bought used in Jersey. It is my main bass. The store owner explained the rust inside saying that "It must have lived at the shore for a while."

My old high school band grew into an 80s band called "Strutter" that did the shore thing quite a bit. I was in college and missed getting in that but gigged later at the shore in some other bands. If anyone knows anyof the old Strutter folks - please PM me.

Like someone said - a piece of Jersey always stays in ya.

So, let me know if I get a number. Take a vote if you have to :)

    - Ziggy -

I finally started lessons last November at the age of 44 and am currently going to one of the instructors at Music and Arts in Marlton. They're on Rt. 70 East just before the (old? ;)) Marlton Circle.

He's OK but there are times when he gets stuck trying to explain something and I end up teaching it to him or he gets something wrong that an instructor just shouldn't get wrong so I sometimes wonder how long I should stick with him. A common example that drives me crazy is that he repeatedly uses the wrong name for a given note on the fretboard. For example, we're playing in F so that note is a Bb, NOT an A#! :meh: However, I told myself I'd give it a year and then re-evaluate things. For now, he's keeping me motivated and is challenging me so I'm not planning to do anything until that year is up. There are several other instructors there so I don't know if I'd ask to switch or just go somewhere else.

Funny you mentioned looking for someone close to your age. My instructor is (I think) 20. It's kind of bizarre.

I'd also be curious to hear what recommendations others might offer. It might also be worth starting a new thread and then pointing to it from inside this one so we don't interfere with all of camello's hard work here.

Hey James, thanks for the recommendation. I taught a bit up until my son was born, and now I'm just trying to find the time to sleep. AND I have another due in 4 weeks!!! :hyper:

For teachers, I would highly highly recommend Kevin McConnell and Craig Thomas. They teach at UArts in Philly. I'm not sure if they take outside students though.

btw, when are we going to have the next NJ GTG!?!?!?!?!?!

  18. Yeah, I figured if you didn't you'd know some 'go to' people. 4 weeks is coming up fast... hopefully we can hook up sometime before that!

[edit]... hmmm NJ GTG!!!! maybe we can hook up with Ed and hash something out for the Fall?[/edit]

  19. Gregg, I suspect Cape May is a bit far, but my instructor, Joe Blong, plays both jazz and blues professionally, and is a very good instructor. He's also about 35 years old or thereabouts, if I remember the scuttlebutt at the store he teaches in...

James - NJ GTG sounds good. My problem is that I work weekends, which makes it difficult to get to events if they're more than two or three hours drive from Cape May. The months the hotel is closed are Jan - March, during time periods where no one wants to travel very much / far (which is one reason the hotel is closed!) I'm the housekeeping supervisor, which means it darned difficult to get either Fridays or Sundays off (those are big turnover days, obviously). There's always the Cape May Jazz Festivals; next one in November (no, I'm not playing at any of the venues - not nearly that good yet!) and will be posting info as to who's playing in November, etc once I find out info, in the appropriate forum... Still, if y'all can set a NJ GTG up halfway close, I'd love to try and come up and meet some other TB folk...
