grr im gettin kinda mad about all these people swapping designs, i want to see some originality! oh well i guess it has benefits as well. whats the general consensus on OLP's? good or bad?
The thign I don't understand about this this particular knock-off, is taht its built to the exact same specs as teh spector "performance" series, which is already a bargain bass at around $300. The only thign I can see OLP doing is cutting corners with worse craftsmanship or lower grade parts- although teh wood and electronics are teh same as the spector. At any rate, I hate buying licensed knock-offs because it feels cheaper, and I would bet that is causes confusion and drives the price of the real thing down. I don't think that it will affect the price of the genuine high-end basses by teh respective manufacturers (such as teh Czech Spectors). I am betting that Spector's sales on the performance series is not too important if they are allowing a dead-on competitions with them.
Spector really is trying everything now. They're trying to cover all the markets. I think they're USA Series are way too over priced and they refuse to lower them. Good luck to them with these OLP's now. -Chris
I kinda feel the same way as 5StringDNA about the OLPs. On the Stingrays, I could understand, but Spector already has a very decent budget line, and mid priced line, and one heck of a USA custom series. Why? I dunno.
yeah it doesnt make too much sense to me either, unless like i said they are getting compensated for it
$$$ talks. I mean, it's not like Spector is a bastion of small time luthier with well established down home ethics. But still... Stingrays are like $850+ used (for a Ray, let alone a Sterling or SR5), so I can understand the OLP entry level instruments. Spector has a $250 bass. Why go OLP?
Exactly my thoughts. Even if Spector is making a little more money by licensing to OLP as well as selling the real thing for about $50-$100 more, why would they want to kill the market for their own basses, and risk compromising their reputation? As far as the USA basses being overpriced- that's nonsense. I don't know of any other "big name" custom USA luthier that charges less than Spector does. Through a good dealer, you can get a USA spector for under $3,000, and I have seen some of the US bolt-ons sold for under $2,000 brand new. uf You go somewhere like Rik's Music or Bass Central, you can get a very generous discount off list price. There are also the Czech basses that are EXTREMELY high quality for the $1200-$1600 you'll pay new.
Only thing I could think of is that I see tons of OLPs at Guitar Center. They don't have many Spectors there at all.
well im gonna ask again since i dont really know about olps, are they considered good (for the money of course) or bad quality wise?
sigh... what some people will do for $$$. why would stuart want to soil his name by attaching it to an OLP?? i would have thought (as said earlier) that it would be more damaging to his rep, and not worth it in the long run!
I wonder if he is going to drop his value line and reinforce the USA and mid line products. It is the only thing I can think of. No one with sense would kill their own market. I suspect that he isn't making money in that market. OLP has the ability to mass produce more product and is more likely to make a killing at it. Dan
the only thing i can think of is that he is goin to drop the lower line....and these might actually be the exact same basses..just with olp on them... steve
Is there any more websites that have news about the OLP Spectors, i checked both the OLP and Spector site and saw nothing...i just want to know cost and when they come out
I have no idea nor do I care about the OLP Spectors, since I'm about to own a real Spector, and an OLP 'ray in a couple weeks(found a good deal on a 5)
