Hi! I'm a 50 year old guy but new to bass. I haven't played an instrument since I was in grade school. I've always considered learning to play bass, but put it off for the last 25 years. New to Texas as well, moving from my home state of California a few years ago, and never looked back. Now I have the time, a little free spending money to take up a hobby. I want to learn to play bass in order to understand the music I love a little more deeply, and to have a hobby that I can do away from my computers and my job which is also about computers and technology. Inspired by a visit from an old college buddy who took up bass about a year ago, I decided to give it a try. Will start my lessons next week! Love many forms of music, but my love is for Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendirx, Led Zeppelin, some harder/deeper rock like Black Sabbath, as well as anything blues based (especially Texas.... Stevie Ray Vaughn and Johnny Winter are on my playlists, always).
Welcome to Texas and the forum. I took up music when I retired in 2000. They say the kids pick it up faster, perhaps, however, I've always thought that they had more time because Dad furnished all the food and shelter things -- giving them a lot of time to practice. When I retired I had the time for practice - and have enjoyed every minute of it. Lessons where you sit knee to knee with an instructor is going to save you a lot of time. Again welcome to Texas. Both mine and my wife's family go back to when it was Mexico. I think you will like Austin. Exciting city.
Welcome to TB and bass playing. I'm a rank beginner myself. Moved from Austin to Virginia two years ago and never looked back. Hope you find fullfillment in Austin! There's no shortage of teachers there; look up Ed Friedland over at Bass Emporium.
Yes, look up Ed Friedland for sure, the man has a knack for putting words together so we understand what he is saying. If nothing else just thank him for all his instruction books.
