new project suggustions?

Discussion in 'Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]' started by bassmonkey144, Oct 30, 2003.

  1. im starting on my new project soon. im takin an essex spb-57 sunburst and replacing all the wiring with vintage fender equipment, replacing the pickups with fender '62 pickups, putting on a black pick guard, and putting on ash trays. i think its a cheap way to make a semi-awesome lookin and sounding bass, any suggustions or comments?

Doesn't that defeat the purpose? New pups, old wires? Wouldn't it sound more vintage if they were really 62's*?

*I have not tried to price vintage '62 pups, so I understand they may be cost prohibitive. Just curious is all.
  3. no dude, sry, i forgot to mention they are the '62 originals that fender makes. lol fogot about that. they are 69.99 at bass parts resouce and 59.99 at musicians friend
  4. Sure, here's what I do to my makeover customs:

    - Install threaded inserts in the neck
    - Convert neck bolts to machine bolts w/ferrules
    - Copper shield the control cavity
    - Install a high quality, high mass nut
    - Recontour the neck to closely replicate the '62 Jazz profile and width.
    - Install straplocks

...besides any of the cool extras in hardware
