Do you guys have any recommendations for an after market Radio/CD/CDrom deck for my vehicle?

These are the things I'm looking for:

    • Line in on face of the unit
    • If the line in on face is not avail, an aux in from the rear is OK, I can run a cable
    • Plays CDs
    • How some decent wattage...I'm not thumpin', but wouldn't mind some head room.... don't want to even think about getting a separate amp later...
    • I have only seen this once (at Super Target of all places), but a USB in on the face would be killer too (for a flash drive)
    • Would be nice if the face detached so I can hide it..
    Any recommendations? As always, thanks!

    What's your budget?

Look into the various pioneer models. They get pretty good ratings for sound quality and they have lots of models with aux in on the face.

Is there anyone in the world more obsessed with the Element?

I got a Clarion DB355MP. It was one of the few that fit my meager budget. I like it though. It plays mp3 discs.

I put a Sony CDX-M8800 in my Miata. It's remote controlled, has a blank black face (pretty discrete), plays MP3s, etc. It has a rear Aux input which I prefer... an Aux jack can be wired in discreetly somewhere in the dash area and you don't have a wire hanging from the front of the head unit. Since I run an older iPod, the mini stereo plug works fine.

I got it for $200 new about six months ago, that model is discontinued but they show up on eBay fairly regularly. I like it, it has a flip down screen, defeatable full motion graphics and the ergonomically designed remote means I can control it without taking my eyes off the road. One thing some didn't like about it is that the faceplate is not removable. Not an issue for me.

Headroom? Best to get something with decent audio outs and get a reasonably priced power amp. The Sony head unit has three sets (front, read and subwoofer), tone controls for each and lots of other tweakable tweaks. It also has pretty decenty power for a head unit... I haven't added an amp yet and run a Clarion low profile powered sub behind the passenger seat. I have a Directed 300 multichannel amp waiting to go in at some point.

... and if you put one on the back seat you'll have surround sound.
