I played one in a store recently when shopping around for a Jazz, and ended up putting that one (in a different colour scheme) down, and walked out with a 70's Classic Vibe instead.

It's got a cool/different look to most J's out in the wild, but the sound wasn't there for me.

    How did the neck's compare?

Not a whole lot different, to me anyways; the respective finishes felt a little bit different, but not miles apart. I *maybe* preferred the Paranormal for neck finish, but then I don't really have a problem with glossy necks (my main bass has been a 4003 for 10 years!), so felt right at home with the feel of both of them

Were the Paranormal's pickups brighter, darker, or what?

Hey, it is what you like, not what I like. I personally don't dig the pickguard. Not my style.

Holy Mary Mother of Boris, that looks fantastic! The only thing I'd change is a slightly more antique tinted poly on the neck.

I would go for one if they did a black pickguard, and black blocks on the neck.

The Paranormal was crispier in the trebles, which I actually don't love about some J's. And the output was a little hotter, too. One thing which I've realized I like a lot, is the CV I walked out with has 70's pickup spacing, whereas the Paranormal has original 60's style. The middle position with the wider 70's spacing just sounds different, and it reminded me more of my 4003 in middle position. I like it a lot. And I don't even slap! The spacing is all personal preference, not objectively better or worse.

Like, for example, I don't really like the solo'd bridge pickup sound on ANY Jazz (sorry, Jaco), but it is, generally, less horrid to me in its 60's placement. The 70's solo'd bridge p'up sounds really terrible/anaemic to my ears, but I walked out with that bass because I loved how it sounded when blended in (which is how I'll set it ~98% of the time), and will likely never use the solo bridge p'up

It needs a nice humbucker in the bridge position.

That's very detailed. Thanks. It also means I would probably like the slightly hotter pickups of the Paranormal! ;)

See my second effort was not for naught. ;)

  18. I like these but prefer last years colors of the transparent white and butterscotch blond. They seem to be well made. On par with the Classic Vibes.

On first version of para 54J, lot ppl wish she come with Tele bass headstock instead regular shape. But, the second version dint update the headstock at all. Maybe FMIC will make one under Fender name and estimate price tag USD 16xx.

On my personal commend is the maple neck and fretboard tinted are too bright and white. I believe the maple neck has better look if it has same classic vibe yellowish poly tint. It's look great match with both new tort and gold pickguard.
