OK, as you may know from my thread in OT, I'm coming to London. And, I'm shopping for new strings. I've changed strings twice since I bought my bass, and both times I bought Rotosound nickels, .45-.105. I'm up for a change to a high-end string now, and I really want some Stainless Steels, as my PD7 will be here soon and I want that growly, Machinehead/Raging Speedhorn/Godsmack type tone. I was looking for perhaps some steel Lo-Riders, heavy or regular, but I'm not sure if either the Bass Centre or The Gallery stock these. I might try some Ernie Ball, nickel or steel, cos they come highly recommended, but how would the nickels sound with my distortion pedal? Finally, any others I should look into(that are stocked at Bass Centre or the Gallery)? P.S. Just noticed that Gallery has LaBella Hard Rockin Steels and DR Hi Beams. Would Hi Beams be more suited to my tonal aspirations than Lo-Riders? What are LaBella like?
Yeah, I think that you should go with some Ernie Ball strings, they have a reall good sound. I have used Ernie Ball's, D'Adarrio's and Fender's and my favorite has been Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky. I think those will go best with that high-end sound you want.
DR's are very good but generally more expensive. I like Ernie Ball's for the money. Of course, it depends on how often you change strings, too. The DR's feel better, slightly smoother than the Ball's. The Ball's last well and have great "zing."
I would have to recommend the DR Stainless Lo Riders. Great zing while keeping the mid/low definition. Hi-Beams are very, very bright.
