    what are good kinds?
  2. could you be a little more specific?

    as in

    What sound do you want?
    What styles do you play?
Do you need to cut through?
    What gauge?
How much do you want to spend?
  3. you don't just ask " what are good strings "

first you tell us " i play an ?-string bass with ?? elements, and i play ??-music. i like ??-sound, ?? tension and preferrably withing the ?? and ?? dollar range, so.. what choices do i have ? "

My incredible gift of ESP tells me that you are a fan of Staind.

Try some DR Hi Beams or Rotosound Swing 66's. There's a lot of other many good choices besides those, but you can't go wrong with either of those for full blast rock.

As with most anything else, it will take time and experience to find strings you like best; however, if you want to try some light strings and are into saving money, go to www.brookmays.com and get some of their noname $3.00 strings. Yes, that's right - $3 for the full set of 4. Don't knock 'em 'til you've tried 'em. I'm new to bass myself, and the bass player in our church's praise band suggested these. Probably the big-buck strings would sound better, but at this point my ear is not trained well enough to tell, so until it is, I'll stick with these ridiculously low-priced ones.
