I'm currently using an Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 with two DB210s at 8 ohm each and want to get a tube head. Been looking at the Fender Bassman 300, SVT-CL and Traynor YBA-300. My question is whether my Aguilar DB210x2 can "handle" these amps or if it would need to eventually upgrade those as well to a 610 or 810-type outfit. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I want to know what I'm getting into!
Watts is the same so easier to handle power wise. But with less power, you might want more sensitivity, so bigger cabs. Sealed cabs are not a good way to go for sensitivity.
I've seen many over-power a stage with a 410 and a 300 watt tube head. I don't think you'll have any trouble. I do recommend not running just one 210 cab though The two combined are rated for 700 watts input and if they are sealed cabs match better with a tube head. Sealed have a more controlled low end as well.
I always run the 2 x 210 together. I'm just wondering about volume. I play hard/classic rock with two very loud guitarists. I want to have the tube breakup present and just think that the 300w head is overkill and may not breakup or be as sweet at non-insane volumes. Point of reference: I usually play the volume at 11-12 o'clock and gain at 10 o'clock on my Tone Hammer 500.
Pretty much have to try it because can't sufficiently describe mix and volumes in text. 300w is for when you don't want power section break up though.
You will have more harmonic content working for perceived volume as long as you get a model with a master volume control. Will it be a perfect fit for you? You won't know till you try it. Seriously, all tube amps can either be a good fit or not be a good fit.
Morning bump- I was hoping that I would have some sort of revelation upon waking up as to whether to go with the V4B or SVT-CL. Sadly, none came. I know the standard answer is to try it out but I don't see how that's possible to mimic playing with a full hard rock/metal band with two guitarists, moderately heavy drummer and a medium to large sized bar with 200 people standing around while at my local music shop. What to do? The idea of getting tube breakup and grind at non-squirrel flying organs dissolving volumes is very appealing but I don't want to run out of head room if so needed for a cleaner tone.
SVT used. Your done. If your cab doesn't cut it get an 810. The Traynor and Fender are great but you could find a better deal used on a SVT. V4b is great too, but would not have the volume you'll need.
