Hi all my Kern is up and running again! I had not played the thing for a while because I moved and misplaced the Wal-wart power cord. I recently decided to play it again (I have several pre's including an Aggie DB680 and Eden Nav). I purchased a new power cord but the connector did not fit. Also the power switch was broken off. I took it to a tech who spliced another connector and replaced the switch. The job took about one day. I got it back yesterday, plugged her in and MAN!!! Sweet, warm, thick, thumpy, buttery low end for days (Acme LO B2 and Aggie GS112! I must have spent an hour or more jammin' with the Kern and the other pre's using my Roscoe LG3005.
The Kern clearly sounds the warmest and thickest and very solid down low. I engaged the Deep switch and immediately had to switch it off! Waaay too much low end! It definitely scoops everything. The Tonal knob was very useful and made the unit very rangey from gritty hi's to warm low-mids...chest pounding lows. I was going to put the Kern up for sale (along with my Roscoe) but I think I will keep it for a few days more just to enjoy the thing LOL. I may even end up selling the Eden instead since the Kerns are no longer being made but we'll see.
Just wanted to share my childish joy LOL.

  2. I love mine w/LG3005 and IP153. Really hifi and warm and fat at the same time. Hard to imagine great to gig with. All the clear highs are there with all the clear and warm fat bottom.
NOS Sylvanias! Aw poopiee! That was a real improvement.

Love the Kern. It's one of those really special pre-amps. Enjoy it! Plus one to Chadds comment. It kills through an IP rig. I've got a Kern and a Demeter in a two space rack on top of my IP310. I'm ready for anything!

  4. Joel did the same thing two of a good thing. They look cool racked like that. Used to decide at the last minute which to use.

Sick! It seems like those two would be on opposite ends of the tone spectrum. Ready for any room's acoustics.

Yea this thing kills with the Roscoe! I want to sell the Roscoe and the Kern to finance a Ken Smith neck-thru purchase, but I may keep the Kern...

  7. I had the privilege of having one of those for a week while a friend was out of town. It was a nice preamp for sure. Lots of low end.
