We got hired for a trio recording for a class at Columbia College here in Chicago. We are a professional band playing for a class in exchange for a free demo. It was fairly high pressure because of the severe time restaints of the class. The tune 'Owl's Groove' is from that session. Any input, positive or negative, is welcome.

Yeah, sounds good to me too. Good bass sound. Kinda sounds like mine, so that's probably why i like it! ;)
You can tell a piano player wrote it. They just have a way of writing songs that usually lay out for their right hand. It's usually arpeggio type melodies, too.

Thanks. That piano player is a real joy to play with. I have worked with him in many settings and there is a constant flow of original ideas.

The bass I used for that session was a Shen Willow 3/4. I just got it a few weeks before the session. My old bass was a workhorse but that bass sings.

Sounds really good, the bass is nice and mellow but not TOO mellow, nice playing. Clean drumming, solid turnover's really good mix too. Classy little peice. Two thumbs up here!

Thanks. I appreciate the input. I try to update the mp3s on my site every month or so.

Just visited "Owl's groove", and really like the groove. The group plays well together, and I really like the bounce you and the drummer are laying down. The bass sounds dark in a "Hadenesque" kind of way. What kind of strings/mic placement were you using?

Thanks Chris. I love playing with both those guys. Fun stuff happens.

As far as setup. We were all in one room. I was in a little fortress of baffles. We were the guinea pigs for a recording class at Columbia College. As a thank you we got a mix. Free demo material. The signal we decided on was a large diaphram condenser about 8" in front of the bridge. Can't remember the exact mic though I think it was an AKG. The bass was a Shen Willow 3/4 with Obligatos.

It's funny. I've had a few TBers talk about aspects of my playing or sound as Hadenesque. I went though a period when I was younger where I did not get him. Within the last few years I started listening back. Wow. That more harmonic approach just kills me. I think that is why Drew Gress is another of my favorites. Both guys are great at note choice.
