I've been looking at a lot of possibilities for my next bass, and have not been able to get everything I want in an "off the shelf" bass. So what do I do?

Over the past few weeks I opened a great dialouge with Nino, who is a terriffic guy to speak and do business with. I've pulled the trigger on an order for a new fiver, and now the wait begins! The specs for my bass are:

    34" 5 string J bass
    Swamp Ash Body
    Spalted Maple Top
    Natural Gloss finish on body
    Maple neck with Ebony Fretboard
    Satin finish on neck
    1 3/4" at nut
No face dots, Side dots only
    As light as possible
    Nordstrand Dual Coil pickups
3 way mini switch for Series/Single Coil/Parallel switching
Aguilar OBP-2 preamp (yeah, I like both boost and cut)
    Black Hardware
Hipshot UltraLite tuning gears (Clover Leaf keys)
Hipshot A style Bridge (19mm spacing)
    Diamond Control Layout
    Pop out battery compartment
    Contoured neck heel
Deeper cutaway for easier access to the 21st fret

Control Layout: Volume with p/p for bypass, Blend, Treble, Bass, Mini switch for p/u (Diamond Layout)

I don't know how to post pics, so hopefully Nino will post here as the bass is being built. Given the components we discussed and agreed on, and Nino's stellar reputation here, I'm pretty certain that I'll get a bass I'll be pleased with!

Needless to say, I'm pretty stoked!:hyper:

I am sure Nino will do a fine job building your dream bass. :)

I was always interested on the spalted bodies from Warmoth but when I contacted them they said they can only use them on bound, flat tops so no contour on the body which was a huge turn off for me.

Have they changed that or are you getting a "flat top" jazz?

    Who's making bodies/necks for him?

  6. Mmmmmmm, t'would be nice if they offered 35" scale and/or 6 strings.........

  7. Sounds like you have a great bass commissioned. I'm looking forward to seeing it come together. I believe this will be the first Valenti with a spalted top. Congrats man.

It is indeed the first with a spalted maple top. I've already chosen the spalt to be used out of 6 choices he gave. I was able to pick it out while I was on vacation in Arizona last week, so maybe the Grand Canyon was an inspiration! My son says that the bass will be "uber funky":D

As I said earlier, I have no idea how to post pics here, so if Nino reads this thread perhaps he can help!

  9. I just realized you're from New Jersey too. I'd love to order a Valenti 5 string, but I really have been wanting a six string for quite some time. One day I will order a bass from him.

I used to live in Matawan. We're neighbors. When the bass is done, I'll let you take it for a spin. PS - a little shameless gigspam - I'll be playing the Tiki Bar in Point Pleasant on Thursday night. Come on out if you can!

  13. Where exactly is it in Point Pleasant? Maybe I'll be able to stop by with some friends. Any weekend shows down there, those would be better for me to come to.

It's on the boardwalk, next to Jenkinsons. We play from 9 to midnight. There's usually a good crowd on Thursdays. It's an outdoor stage, so hopefully the weather will hold out!

I do offer 35" scale necks.

Currently, I do not offer 6 string basses.

    I've recently stopped using USACG.

Tim Cloonan at CallowHill basses is Philly is making necks and bodies for me to my specs.

These basses will have thicker headstocks to help reduce deadspots, a slightly deeper cutaway on the treble side for easier access to the higher frets, slightly thinner body to help reduce the weight, block inlays and binding and a quicker turnaround time.

There are also going to be a few more models coming in the near future.
