Did anyone else's Ad Aware 6 stop working when you last tried downloading a new reference file? Well, fear not, the reason is that there's a new version called "Ad Aware SE" that you can download for free. This version is a lot smarter, and also a lot slower. It scans "everything", including .cab files, .zip files, and so on. The first time I ran it, it found 11 items that weren't caught by the previous edition, one of which was potentially very dangerous. The old reference files won't work on the new version, and vice versa, and Lavasoft has stopped supporting the previous version. What'll happen on version 6 is that the next time you try to download a new reference file, your meter will stop at 5 percent complete, and when you try to run the program it'll say "reference file not present or corrupted". Just click on the "read more details" link and it'll take you to the Lavasoft site, from which you can download the new SE version of Ad Aware. Once again, it's free for personal use. Kudos to Nicolas Stark for delivering enhanced security to the Microslop desktop!
