Is there a difference in quality between newer and older ampeg cabs? An old ' 70's v4 cab i looked at was very heavily built with 9 or 11 ply and much bracing.
  2. Yes--at least as it pertains to SVT cabs. Lately, I've looked at many, many Ampeg cabs and can tell you that the old ones are constructed of actual "real" plywood. The newer ones are made of "particle" wood/board and I wish I could tell you when the changeover occurred. Particle board is, IMO, a tad better than "wafer" board but much inferior to real plywood. I now use the good 'ol "knock-test" when examining them because you can definitely hear a difference knocking on them. I could hear less of a difference (sound-wise) when A/B'd. I ran them individually and together. Have not been able to open them all the way up yet in the right venue which could make a lot of difference. We'll see. That's gonna happen in a few short weeks. :D
