I am going to get the chance to go to new york for about a week, and i was wondering if there is anything i should absolutley, no ifs about it, do while over there. Sure, there are the touristy things, but what do real new yorkers enjoy doing?

    thanks,
    Slick

You aren't a real new yorker. They will smell that immediately. Don't do the real new yorker things.

If you want to do what most New Yorkers do, go see a bad New York punk band.

Hit up the 4th Street Courts in Greenwich Village. If you got enough game to play there, then head on over to Rucker Park in Harlem.

Those were the two things I HAD to do on my last trip to NYC.

  8. I can't help you with your initial question, but just some advice: Pretend there's a "no turn on red" sign at every light. They get pissed if you don't.

Here's my normal overnight NYC routine....

Take the train in to Grand Central during the commute.
Have a bagle and coffee on the steps of the library for breakfast.
Walk up to the guitar shops (48th St. between 6th and 7th ave).
    Have a coffee.
    Take the subway downtown.
Have a noodle bowl for a late lunch by NYU.
Shop for a hat at a resale clothing store in the village.
Go see an event at the Garden (even if it's the crappy Rangers - but their season will be over soon enough).
    Grab a cab.
Get a few beers and a bite to eat at the Heartland at Union Square.
Go the Bitter End, Arlenes, or CB-GB's and hang out.

    Sleep somewhere.

Get up and get a nice coffee at Balthazar, read the NewYorkPost.
    Shop for a used book.
Grab a slice of Pizza at Lombardi's (must be Lombardi's on Spring St. Between Mott and Mulberry).
Walk all the way back up to Grand Central.
    Get a Nat Sherman Cigar.
    Split.

    Have fun.
Check out www.virtualnyc.info before you go.

Check to see if Mingus Big Band is playing at the Fez. The Fez is under a restaurant called Time. They used to play every Thursday night...not sure if that is still the case. Anyway, INCREDIBLE band with rotating lineup and a cool basement club. I've seen John Stubblefield, Chris Potter, John Hicks, and many others with them.
