I just stumbled across this board, and timing is everything. New player, have a well kept old Epi Rivoli that I have been learning on. The strings need to be replaced very badly. Any recommendations? I know that I should learn what string fits me the best, but as I am starting out I need a point of reference. Thanx for all your help-

    Welcome to TalkBass, Giant.

I'm guessing you want to stick with short scale. D'Addario XL has a short scale set. Fender also has short scale strings, but they may/may not complement your hollow body and Fender short scale basses have solid bodies.

www.juststrings.com is one good online place I use. They're big on service. www.getstringscheap.com is another place, but I haven't heard good things about their service at all.
