My son is starting in third grade orchestra and needs an instrument to keep at home to practice on- i can't drop a ton of money on a bass if he is not going to stick with it- anyone have a student who no longer uses their half size?? or even quarter??

found cecilio on amazon for about $600, but not sure that will be a good idea for him to learn on if it doesn't sound good!!

  2. Avoid the Cecelio crap!

If we knew your location and price range we would be able to be more helpful.

Third grade students often need an 1/8 or 1/4 size. Why not rent an instrument from a local shop? That way you can get a well setup instrument and be able to change size as needed.

A well setup instrument is critical at this stage as the students arms and hands have not developed much strength yet.

Excellent advise. We rent a violin for my grand daughter for $30 per month. Out of that $22 is held in escrow towards the purchase of a violin. So, when she is ready for a full size instrument, it will be largely paid for. If she quit playing today I would still have enough in escrow to buy a violin. It could then be hers or sold to use the money for a different purpose, or instrument.

Revising this post. Talk to people like the instructor, let them give you advise on which music shops to visit. Most are, but some are not honorable.

You do not say where you are located however there is a 1/4 that has been on CL here for a while: http://columbus.craigslist.org/msg/3841047608.html given the time it has been for sale I am guessing he would take less. Christopher is a good starting out bass if it is set up properly. I have no financial interest in this bass but would be happy to help you with this one (check it out, etc.), If it is of interest feel free to PM me a phone number and we can discuss live.

    Best,

Oops, sorry...in NY on Long Island. Price range is probably too low for anything new, so I am pretty hard to please, but I have the option to let him use the school's instrument this Year until we see how he likes it and borrowing it on weekends, though I prefer to have one at home too.... I am glad I found this forum, and I will check out the CL one, thanks for the advice!!!

  8. Call Ideal Music in Manhattan. They may be sold out of their huge stock of old basses, or they may have something decent for a good price. I haven't dropped in for a while.

    There's also this:

I had something similar and it was OK. The seller has been trying to move it for a while, so you may be able to get a better price. If you go for the Juzek be sure to have a violin shop look it over before you finalize the sale. There are several shops in your area.

Having an instrument at home will EXPONENTIALLY improve his learning and rate of growth. Well, assuming he touches the bass.

Music Go Round in Gahanna, OH has a 1/8 Shen SB80, it needs a good set up, fixed bridge and someone put +/- 3/16" shims under the feet to raise the action which is now pretty high. Looks to be in pretty good shape, with a few bumps, they are asking $799 (which I think is too much) but might deal.
