I'd look around ebay for used MIM Fender P's or J's

I have one. It's a P bass copy. $99, and better than a lot of $200 basses that I have played. I own three bass that list for over $2500, and this SX gets some playing time, even though it only cost $99.

Mine had issues with the fret ends in the upper registers, they were kind of sharp. It hurt to play above the 13th fret. Since it was so cheap, I decided that this would be a great opportunity to learn how to dress frets. So I did. Problem solved.

Other than that, the bass is totally stock.

I think the cheapest Yamahas are in that range. They are good for their price, I personally don't really like Yamaha basses.

Mine sounds as good as a MIM Fender P Bass. And other than the fretwork, the fit & finish is on par with a Squier, and almost as good as MIM Fender.

Read the Essex megathread, and all of your questions will be answered.
