again, hoping this is the right place for this...

I recently bought an unfinished bass body from eBay, and now I'm wondering about how to go about finishing it. I would like to do a trans-black stain on it, with a super high-gloss, super deep finish. What kind of products do I need to be looking at for this? Is there a way to do it in one product (like a tinted clear) or will I need to stain it with the black first and then clear coat it?

Please and thanks to any and all help!!!

(BTW, it's my first home-built bass...and probably not the last!!!)

It's the exact place for this, don't worry.

There is a one-shot product from Minwax (not a plug for Minwax; I was at the hardware store today and happened to see this) that does just what you want. It's called PolyShades, and it comes in nine colors. There's not an exact black, but I think you'll find it may be what you seek.

The stain first - clear coat second option may be your only other choice, but it's not really that much more of a hassle.
