Me & JSonnenblick (sp?) has a nice trade. I got a nice Atelier Z 5 string + an original portrait of myself (from J's son Ross) :) for my blue Gecko + $250.

The AZ is very nice. It sounds great. I haven't done any comparisons to any other basses yet.

... and the hits just keep on coming!

Nino, you are really making me jealous with all these basses you end up with... I guess it is just true that great minds think alike!

  5. Oops. I started a thread about our trade before I saw your thread, Nino.

That's OK - the topic is different: I mostly just raved and drooled about your Sadowsky 5. . .

Congrats Nino, it'll be interesting to hear how the Z comes out in an a/b comparo with your other basses. Another TB'er, Lowfreqguy, left his Z at my house for about a week and it was interesting to do a direct comparison between it and my other Jazz style basses. I like the Atelier Z's and it was an eye-opening experience.

  7. You got rid of both of your Geckos?

Did you dislike the Gecko or just wanted something different?

  8. He still has his Lacewood Gecko with EMGs.

    It's sweet, BTW.

17mm. They also make a wider spaced bass. The one I had in was 17mm, which worked but wouldn't be my first choice. OTOH some people love narrow spacing.

  11. . . . I have other 5's with 17 mm string spacing, and I'm fine with 'em. It's just tha with a Jazz, I'm switching back and forth from a 4-string Jazz I own, so the difference in spacing was messing with my head. When I switch from my Jazz to my L2500, though, the basses are so different already that the 17mm thing doesn't throw me off.

    Boy, am I PICKY!

    Wow Nino that is sweet!
Looks like it gives off that 70's Jazz bass vibe! Hey is that binding on the neck? My favorite! I love bound necks.

I actually wanted to give Jordan the Lacewood Gecko but he liked the blue one better. I wanted to keep the Blue one cause I built it. But I like the feel of the unfinished LaceWood geckos neck better.

I think I'm going to take out the 40DC in the Gecko & replace them with 40J's & maybe an on board Sadowsky. Or I might get an out board Sadowsky so I can use it with the other passive basses I own.

    I did a quick comparision between the A Z & my 24 fret 5 & Vintage 4.

The 24 fret 5 still feels like no other bass I've ever played or owned. Sound wise, it's the one I prefer most. nice& growly. the highs are very present & the lows are booming. If any of you guys haven't DL'ed my bands demo from MP3.com the 1st 4 songs (Finster, Old Balls, Clean Break & WIMS) are the sound I'm talking about.

The Vintage 4 is has alittle more bottom end then the 24fret 5 but the highs are very present also. (Also, the strings on the Vin 4 are about 4 months old with ALOT of playing time on them)

The Atelier Z with Jimmy Copollo's pre amp was warmer & the highs weren't as pronounced BUT it wasen't muddy at all. The string spacing is alittle tighter than the 24 fret 5 but not as narrow (I think) as my older Spector's, G&L's & MusicMan SR5. The bass is also alittle heavy, but not as heavy as the other 3 basses just mentioned.

1st impressions of this bass are that I like it ALOT!!! I like it so much that IU called Gard to see if he can change my Black w/Maple board Joe Osborn SkyLine 5 to a 44-02 DLX in cherry burst. :)

Yeah, it has cream binding. I was looking into finding a Used Geddy Lee with a super low Buy It Now (I can dream :)) but not anymore.

  17. sweet. i love that color scheme.

  18. That sure is a nice looking bass, and if what Jsonnenblick's said about it is true, it's got a tone to match it's superb looks. Enjoy it!
    Now, I've got two queries:
    - Is Atelier Z still in business, now that one of the former luthiers build the Sadowsky Tokyo basses?
    - And, the burning question I guess most of us want to see answered, how does it compare to a Sadowsky Tokyo?
I know you haven't compared it to any other basses yet, but since you might get the opportunity...nudge, nudge. ;)

  19. Thats what I'm going to do Nino. I am going to buy an outboard preamp so I can use it with any bass I own.
