so I've got a nice warmoth maple neck that I applied 3 coats
of tru oil to. Love the finish but I want a more vintage tint AND
    a longer lasting finish.

So I'm thinking of applying some ReRanch neck amber nitro to the
neck ( I already have the can ). Wondering if that will cause any issues.

    Thanks

    Bill

I'm looking forward to seeing the responses, but I tend to think that anything over oil is a bad idea. Like I said, I'm looking forward to replies that are backed up by experience.

yeah .... if its not recommended then I could darken it up with more oil.

My dealing with a EBMM maple neck with oil is that it seems to get and show dirt quickly.

if lacquer is not good over oil then I'd wonder if I could preserve a darker oil color with a poly spray.

When in doubt, complete a test piece.

In theory, you should be able to apply nitrocellulose lacquer over TruOil - as long as the TruOil is completely cured.

Your test piece will tell you whether practice confirms theory.

none of the acoustic guitar dudes I used to hang out with would shoot nitro over oil.

I have sprayed polyurethane over tru-oil, and it worked ok. The tru-oil in question had cured for a week before I sprayed the poly.

I know poly works well on top of an oil finish, I don't know for sure, but I would say nitro and oil wouldn't play nice together.

I've sprayed nitro over Tru-oil many times with no compatibility problems. I scuff the Tru-oil with white Scotchbrite or 0000 steel wool, then wipe with a rag dampened with naptha, let dry and shoot nitro. Process works good when using Tru-oil on a neck, then applying headstock decal, bury with nitro and level sand.

Yes make sure Tru-oil has cured form 3-4 days.
