Hi guys, I bought a Gunn 200 amp (NZ made clone of a 200 watt Marshall head unit) and just had it refurbished with brand new KT88's etc. I thought this would make a great bass amp but I'm dissapointed with the low end - gets too much distortion from bottom E up to about C. Is this an amp problem or more likely the Cab I'm using? Its a no-name 15" cab which sounds ok but a bit muffled when I drive it with my Ibanez 65 watt amp. The 15" driver is rated up to 360 Watts. Thanks in anticipation.

Hard to say without hearing it. What part is distorting? The preamp? The power amp? The speaker?

hard to say even listening to it ;)

I suspect it may be the cab, its an unknown speaker in a proprietary NZ made cab - so I'm sure its not designed for this thing.

Have spoken to someone who knew the guy who designed the amp etc etc and he reckons they were a solid amp (it is an old amp, circa 1972 ish) So its more likely to be the cab.

Problem is I can't get a decent clean sound at high volume on the lower strings - D string upwards is fine, but E and A are a bit dodgy, I get a growl - no good for the music we do (Soul)

  4. From my understanding the Gunn 200 is a clone of the Sunn Coliseum.

Try it through a legit bass cab (a bass cab, not guitar cab) and see if the issue persists. If it distfarts through a bass cab that would suggest issue with the head. If it sounds good then issue lies with your current cab.

OP hasn't logged in in over a decade. I think they've either learned to love the growl of their head or they've moved on to a new head.

Either that or they stopped playing bass.

And I learned that the Gunn 2000 (clever spelling) is a clone of the Sunn Coliseum. I'm okay with my experience in this thread.

Gunn might just be the name of the guy who made the amp. :D

I didn't get caught by the date of the OP this time so there's a plus!! :)
