Hey, as stated in my topic I dont mean to offend anyone.

I play guitar and have the impression that bass is really easy in comparisson.

I'd like to learn how to play bass so that i can play multiple insturments. im curious though as to if bass is actually a difficult instrument to play.

can anyone suggest some examples of hard bass songs to play that i could dl and check out?

seriously. Try some Jaco Pastorious. Then Listen to some victor Wooten. Then try that. It's a great playing ability to shoot for. Seriously.

Like everyone else said - Jaco Pastorius, both solo, and the things he did with Weather Report.

    Here are some particular tunes:

    Weather Report - Teen Town
    Weather Report - Havona
    Jaco Pastorius - Donna Lee
Jaco Pastorius - Portrait Of Tracy

But *don't* make the mistake of thinking that just because you can play fast/hard things on the guitar, that you can play them on the bass.

Like I said, very different animal.

  8. I suggest you play everything you consider hard on guitar, but on bass.. beggin playing only the roots of every chord and then grooving with the rest of the notes on them.. Or playing guitar solos you know on bass.. why not, uh?

    Bass is easy sheesh

Check out Jaco's arrangement of a bach piece entitled "chromatic fantasy"

that is quite possibly one of the most insane songs I've ever heard played on a bass.

Any instrument is hard (i.e. requires time and effort) if one wants to become good at playing one.

As far as songs, try Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." This song may not be as technical, per se, as Jaco's "Portrait of Tracy" or "Chromatic Fantasy." However, try and nail the feel of the song. That is the key.

It's all very subjective. Many bassists prefer a good clean groove. Looks easy, and it may or may not be, but either way, it's good, and good for the song. I know I love a good groove. Then there are the bassists who take it to the extreme, as mentioned above. I personally think bass is just as difficult as any other instrument when played in a certain way, but whether or not it's always that way really depends on the player and the song. Reggae for example could have a very simple bassline, but it must be very accurate to the beat, and executed flawlessly. I think subtle details in technique with bass are much more important than guitar, and that is why many people don't notice them.

Or then again, not accurate to the beat, but rather - way behind it :D

  14. No offense taken. Here's your answer.

Your impression is completely wrong. Bass is as hard to play well as anything else.

  15. Or then again, accurate in terms of how it is placed relative to the beat.;)

    In your basement.
Just like any instrument if you want to suck yes it is easy.

I am sure there are some kick arse kazoo players somewhere.

Bass is easy as you make it.

I can say guitar is way easier than bass if I just got play powerchord, and Blink182 songs, and bland easy stuff like that.

But then If I go try to ply something like Stevie Ray, Yngwie Malmsteen, or BB King, Then I'd see how guitar is a much more difficult instrument to play.

Yes, bass is easier than guitar, if you play simple, follow the root of the guitar, no brains needed songs.

I think from a technical aspect, bass is harder than guitar. Hand position, fretting mistakes, how to get the best fingering technique. There's a lot going on to play a bass well.
