    Hi,
I Have some noise issue Lakland 55-01 (not first owner). problem is that there is lots of noise in the signal. when running passive, noise is even worse (so it's not the preamp, at least i think so). it's really anoying. i have other basses and on same setup there is no noise! :eyebrow:
i know that CRT monitors on PC cause lots of noise , and yes, i hear a bit on other both passive and active basses
but on 55-01 it's really really too much :rollno:

anyone had similar problems with 55-01?

    Thnx

I've noticed this from time to time with my 55-01 as well. I think it's the MK1 pickups or possibly the shielding. I assume pickups because I can negate buzz when my bass is plugged in to my amp (and I'm standing in close proximity to the amp) if I turn the orientation of my bass. Stand in one place and turn either clockwise or counter-clockwise and listen to whether or not the level of noise changes depending on where the bass is pointing.

I think if noise levels change based on the direction of the magnetic poles of your pickups relative to the amplifier, it's probably the pickups.

  3. I had the exact same problems with my 55-01, including directional-based noise. I'm not sure what resolved it, but it was one or more of the following: Full copper shielding and star grounding, new Bartolini MK5CBC pickups, new Bartolini NTMB preamp. It could not be any more silent than it is now.

Here's some more info from my previous posts on this topic:

  4. I haven't noticed any significant noise on my 5501 unless I crank up the Treble on the pre. Other than that, any noise generated is dependent on what amp I'm using and where it's plugged in at.

For example, at my folks house in their spare bedroom it's fine. At my house in my living room I get a minor hum. But at my house in my spare bedroom it's fine.

If you're getting significant noise in both active and passive modes, I'd shoot Kirk at Lakland an email or call and see what he thinks. He's really good at replying and diagnosing issues.

Hmmm, MK5CBC's..... Were those a drop-in replacement? What did those do for the sound of the bass? I've been thinking of an NTMB for my 55-01 to warm it up as it sounds a little harsh and crispy on the D & G strings up the neck. Sorry, veering a little OT.

  6. Mostly. See the links I posted above. The hole pattern is different. So are the wiring possibilities.

It's hard to say specifically what the pickups did for the sound as I upgraded the preamp at the same time. I can say that the overall upgrade made an enormous difference in the sound of the bass.

I put an NTMB in my 5501.
    There was an improvement....somewhat.
But ultimately switching pickups had the biggest and most satisfying impact.
Nordstrand pickups drop in. if you dig that sound.
Maybe their dual coils would sound good.
Someone put those in a 5501 here and I think left soundclips.
    Do a search...?
