Non-jazz jazz bass

    I want a bass that sounds like a jazz, but looks nothing like it. I despise the look of a jazz but love it's sound. I don't feel comfortable playing an instrument that I don't like the look of, and it hurts my mojo. And I would prefer something under $500-600, but suggest anything and everything for future viewers of the thread who came looking for answers.

    EDIT: I'm aware of PJ's but I don't want them included in this discussion.

    G&L JB2s are jazz basses, but without pickguards and control plates. The Tribute version is $600 new, I think. Check them out.

    Also check out Fender Jaguars (not the Modern Player version), they have jazz pickups and look pretty killer, though all the controls they have might be a little overwhelming at first.
