Non-reverse Gibson Thunderbird Sect

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by A. D. Fairhurst, Jan 18, 2016.

  1. In a huge population of Thunderbird players, the fans of the rarer non-reverse style of the mid to late sixties. (And the reissue model of 2013 or something. It's awesome too and welcome here.) So non-conventional bird lovers, come show and converse about your brilliant basses!

I don't like the non-reverse shape much. If it were the reverse of the reverse shape, it'd be cool, but it's not even close. I guess I want a double-reverse Tbird.

  3. I love the non reverse look, but I don't have one. Check out Cataldo's site, they have some nice looking NR's on there.

I love the non reverse look as well.
So, what are the best modern reproductions of this style?
I know about the Fano PX4, which looks really nice, and the Mike Lull NRT4.

I have six 60s Gibson NR Thunderbirds and number of custom built NR birds made either by myself or builders like Cataldo. This is the nicest one on my collection a 69 Thunderbird II, one of seven shipped that year. The bass has all the covers, mutes and case. WP_20131027_005.jpg

I really love the look (I like regular birds too, but something about the NR is just cool on its own), but haven't had the chance to play one. I've just missed out on two Pelham Blue NR TBirds in the past month or two, to boot.

Nope never! It's funny I make reproduction covers for those that like them.

  16. Do they get in the way?

Considering how rarely the 2012 Gibby NR comes up, apparently, on the used market, what is the current state of "getting a NR new"?
    - I've heard about Cataldo plenty, but don't see the NR on his site as an option
    - I don't see them on the BaCH site
    - Looks like you can get them from Brad Lowe as well

I also like the idea of getting one in 32" scale, personally - the reach out to the first fret on regular 'birds is ridiculous for my short self. Any experience with that? I see it's an option for Cataldo and I assume for Lowe as well since he does med-scale necks.
