While I know it never made the cut into the mainstream, my '10 Candy Red Big Al has been my number one since I got it new and now I luckily found this Charcoal unscathed & unplayed case queen and also a '10. Amazingly made it from the left side to right side of the country right through all the polar vortex crap and after a few hours of calming down was playable right out of the box. I put a white guard on it and now I have 1a and 1b.
Oh, so you got that charcoal one! Congrats! Its unbelievable how difficult it is to find a 5SSS. 4's pop up everywhere...
They look in pretty dang good shape..like brand new! Congrats on your twinning score. btw...someone told me all those buttons are so you can get an accordion sound. Is that true?
I’ve liked the Big Al 5 SSS model since I saw a demo clip on Bass Central. The tonal range available to a player is incredible.
They're awesome... Sort of like the high power and richness of a Bongo, but the SSS gives a bit of edge to the tone.
I guess if you ingested enough of bad things you could probably get wooly, but I'm not into a lot of knobs and switches but it's just a button for each pickup all three up give you the bridge and middle in series as apposed the positions are in parallel. The fourth button is active /passive. knobs are Vol then a dedicated tone for passive and then the four band EQ.
Great score, I love my Big Al, had a 4H but sold it to get a 4SSS. The preamp looks complicated but couldn't be easier to use.
Congratulations on a great find! I’ve never run into the 5-string version of the SSS Big Al. But the 4-string version I got a brief crack at trying was impressive. Super tone machine if there ever was one. You could easily make that your only bass no matter what style of music you play IMO. Just wish I could get my head around the looks. Something about it just…well…it’s just…no. But that’s just me. Play it well!
I had a Dargie Delight Big Al at one time. Weird greenish yellow; color changed based on lighting and angle. Sold it. Too Music Man-ish. Pretty zingy..
