Not so keen on Fender.....

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by TheLump, Sep 29, 2012.

  1. I love the style and history of Fender guitars in general, but I just never get the sound I want from them. I know many Low Frequency Managers consider this blasphemous but I just wanted to see what you guys thought.
What basses do you guys favor and why, post pics if you have them!

    I like Fenders...thanks for asking.
  4. You like a different tone. Nothing blasphemous about that - even for the most die hard Fender fanatic.

I'm pretty fond of the Fender Precision. My current bass is a recent American Standard with Chromes on it. Sweet.

I love fender-style basses made by guys like Mike Lull, or Sadowsky but Fender's don't wow me.

Oh, another I don't like Fender thread.

I like all kinds of basses, I use whatever I need to get the sound I want on any given night. The majority of them were designed by Leo, but I've got a few that weren't.

It would suck if we all liked the same thing. You said nothing blasphemous...
  13. First bass I laid my hands on was my Dad's '61 Precision. First song I successfully learned on it was Kiss' War Machine :) That was 25 yrs ago. Since then I have tried/owned many different brands of bass guitar. Most we're satisfactory, a few were absolutely wonderful. Today, my main instrument in an '83 Fender Precision.

I don't like Ampeg amps. Just 'cause Jimmy is here.

Love love LOVE my Precision Elite II. Great tone - full, deep, rich, and bright. Two pairs of lace sensor pickups, preamp, 3-way switches for both the preamp and tone pot. Very versatile. Got some new strings on the way. Tuning her to drop D.

Also have a Precision Special Deluxe. Not quite the tone as the Elite but certainly gets the job done. Plays very nicely. This is an old pic. Right now I've got her strung with nylons.

Have an HM I am refinishing as a silverburst. I need to put a couple of coats of lacquer on. Just waiting for some drier weather - pretty humid where I live and have to do it outdoors . Plays nicely as well. Has 3 lace sensor pickups with a 5-way switch. Also had a bad TBX pot. Haven't listened to it yet with the new pot as the refin isn't quite complete. Going to string him with Chromes. Another older pic.

Finally my Dimension. Currently, this one is my favorite player. She's just really easy to play. Active EQ, fretboard has a 12" radius. She's strung with medium gauge rounds.

I love all of my Fenders. Even the ordinary one has something special about her. Currently keeping an eye open for a bargain on a Jazz Plus, to add to the collection.

I love my Fenders. But in non-Fender brands, but still designed by Leo, I loved the sound from G&L. However, I couldn't get used to the narrow string spacing.

So get one with a different neck. They have a few options...
