So it's round one of Christmas at my house tonight and check out what the best wife in the world got me! It's a hand-tooled leather pickguard made by MK Holloway. Oh man is this cool. It has a thin plastic backing to keep it stiff and stop the screws from tearing through. I had a Fender-branded pickguard on here before, and every screw hole lined up perfectly. The guy really does nice work. Look at that detail! Totally wagging my tail right now. This is my parts-P that I have setup for the Blues Brothers tribute I'm in (hence the foam). That's an alder Warmoth body that I gave about 25 coats of boiled linseed oil, an MIJ Jazz neck that I bought here on TB, Babicz, P-46, tonestyler, and a three year old set of TI flats. Yep.
It's a mute. Makes the notes decay faster and have a great punchy round sound. Also makes intonation-nazis lose their mind. OP sweet Axe. Wouldn't change a thing.
It's a mute of sorts. Kills the sustain and adds some thick. It's an old school sound. Read up about it. Was very common back in the day.
And thanks everyone else. I saw a picture somewhere a long time ago of a leather pickguard and got the idea stuck in my head. I didn't put this bass together with it in mind, but now that it's on there I'm in love. I had a B/W/B on there and I liked it, but this is just so... oh it's just so... yeeeeahhh.... So now I'm thinking I might need to go back to chrome knobs. And brown foam?
Oh totally. That would look even better than this one. Look him up. My wife emailed back and forth with him a couple times and said he was very cool and easy to work with. It wasn't cheep mind you, but for this kinda work I think it was reasonable. He does custom work too....
Yep. I checked out his Esty page that you posted a link to. I want one of his white on black desert skulls floral embossings for my '54. That would be 'Da Bomb'! I will definitely be in touch with him real soon.
