there are some nuts that can't be suck back.thankfully, its just my bass guitar's
    super glue?cow hide glue?
    is strong glue necessary?
can the strings actually hold the nut in place without glue?

Mine fell off before, but I just placed it back without any glue. The strings hold it in place - IMHO, there's no real need to stick it back :)
  3. If you decide to glue it (like Rusty said, it's not always necessary) then use superglue, but only a few tiny drops, then you'll still be able to remove the nut if it needs replacing.
  4. I would recommend not using superglue, but something that's easy to remove, like elmers or wood glue or whatever.
  5. Better go see a doctor about it! ;) Someone had to say it!

Anyways, just enough glue to let it stand on its own a little. The strings will hold it in place, and it will be easy to remove later if it requires changing.
