Nut problem...

Discussion in 'Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]' started by theuglybassguy, Oct 6, 2002.

  1. I have had this wierd vibration from the nut on my bass. I have only had the bass since april and i didn't expect anything to go wrong this soon. Do i need to get a new nut or can i fix the one i have. It is plastic so i was just thinking about getting a new one so it will last longer and their really cheap anyway.

Thanks in advance for any help,
  2. Are your strings snug in the slots?

How are your strings wound around the posts? Make sure they are wound about three times (requires cutting with wire cutters) and wind them high to low so that you increase the break angle at the nut. I assume you have a Fender type of bass where the headstock is almost the same angle as the neck (no break angle) and as such, if you wind the A string from low to high, the string approaches the nut too straight and will rattle.
