So, I take my strings off, and I'm oiling up my fretboard, and paying some attention to my girlfriend(bass), and all of a sudden, the nut falls off.

I ask my guitarist about that, and he's like, "oh, it's supposed to be like that, the strings will hold it in place"

Now, the nut has what looks like some old dried up glue, so i doubt that nuts are just held in place by the strings.

And considering how hard I play, it's bound to move. So, what should i do?

No man... it's definitely not supposed to come off. The strings don't hold it in place, glue does. I'd take it to a repair guy you trust and have it reglued.
