Nut replacement

I've bought an old Hohner Jazz Bass copy and the nut is broken. I have a Jazz Bass brass nut that I want to fit to it, but the 2 nuts are quite different.

The original nut is about 8mm tall and extends 2.5mm above the finger board.

The brass Jazz Bass nut I have is about 3.5mm tall.

My idea is to replace the original nut with a piece of wood and shape to the same contour/radius as the fingerboard then file a slot around 1mm deep to set the Jazz Bass nut into.

Does that make sense? If so, Is it the right thing to do?
