nut width??

Discussion in 'Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]' started by Milothicus, Apr 14, 2002.

  1. What difference does nut width make? i see 1/4, 3/16, and 1/8 size nuts but don't know which to use. it's for a bass i plan to build, so there's no nut size i'm replacing........any input is helpful.
  2. Nut thickness has no effect on tone or anything else. That's why you've seen different sizes. The most common reason for a size difference is where the nut is placed in regard to the fretboard. On Fender style necks it's in a slot on top that crosses the end of the fretboard. On, say an Alembic, the nut is thicker and butted up against the end of the fretboard. In any case the string stops vibrating at the first point that comes in contact with the nut - the front edge.
